Reconstruction of Light & Shadow:

Five-Dimensional Lighting Narrative for Zhangmutou Bar, Dongguan

Project Description

Taking the actual lighting project of Zhangmutou Bar in Dongguan as a case study, this article deeply analyzes how modern commercial spaces can build an immersive light and shadow environment with rich layers and variable emotions through the systematic combination of multiple categories of professional lighting fixtures. The project uses five core products: Lifting Square Beam Screens, Laser Lights, Bee-Eye Lights, Effect Lights and Beam Lights, achieving precise coordination between mechanical movement and light changes through an intelligent control system. This article aims to share the functional positioning and collaborative logic of these five products in bar spaces, providing professional lighting design ideas for owners, designers and industry peers.

Project Introduction

Zhangmutou Bar is located in the local core business district of Dongguan. The owner wanted to create a nighttime social space with both industrial texture and futuristic technology. The spatial structure is a typical layout of bar counter, loose seating area, dance floor and booth area, with obvious ceiling height advantages, providing a physical foundation for multi-dimensional lighting arrangement.

The core proposition of the project was: how to make lighting not only “illuminate” the environment, but also “tell stories” within a limited space, realizing seamless switching from leisure socializing to party carnival. Our solution was to build a Five-Dimensional Lighting Narrative System — Lifting Square Beam Screens define spatial structure, Laser Lights create visual highlights, Bee-Eye Lights add texture details, Effect Lights lay ambient tones, and Beam Lights strengthen rhythmic dynamics. The five types of products perform their duties, coordinated by a central control system, jointly shaping a breathable, changeable and interactive light and shadow space.

Project Achievements

Built into a regional landmark lighting bar. Weekend occupancy rate increased by 35%, becoming a new nightlife landmark in eastern Dongguan.

Detailed Analysis of Project Overview

The lighting design of Zhangmutou Bar faced several key challenges. First, although the space had considerable ceiling height, it was not an open large area, requiring visual extension within a limited range. Second, the bar operated over a long period, with completely different lighting demands from evening lounge to midnight party. Third, the owner hoped to achieve top-tier bar lighting effects comparable to first-tier cities under a controlled total budget.

In response to these challenges, we conducted systematic spatial and functional analysis.

Time Period Demand Analysis

  • 19:00–22:00 (Lounge Period): Warm, soft, layered ambient lighting to support social conversation
  • 22:00–00:00 (Transition Period): Lighting gradually increases dynamic elements to warm up party atmosphere
  • 00:00–02:00 (Party Period): High-energy, high-rhythm visual impact to drive emotional climax

Spatial Zoning Demand

  • Entrance Area: Recognizable visual symbols to guide customers in
  • Bar Area: Accurate working lighting with high-quality beverage display atmosphere
  • Dance Floor: Strongest dynamic effects and visual impact
  • Booth Area: Adjustable ambient lighting balancing privacy and overall participation

Based on the above analysis, we deployed five types of fixtures at different spatial levels, forming a three-dimensional light and shadow matrix: high-altitude structure + mid-altitude dynamics + ground atmosphere. Lifting Square Beam Screens were installed directly above the dance floor, using their lifting function to form a variable visual focus; Laser Lights were placed on both sides of the stage, presenting highly penetrating beam networks through haze; Bee-Eye Lights were arranged around to project textures onto walls and floors; Effect Lights provided overall color washing; Beam Lights focused on strengthening rhythmic points.

Project Solution

Our core solution was to establish a three-dimensional control logic: vertical stratification, horizontal zoning, time segmentation, achieving seamless collaboration of five fixture categories through intelligent programming.

1. Vertical Stratification: Building a 3D Visual Space

We divided the space into three visual layers:

  • High Layer (above 3.5m): Dominated by Lifting Square Beam Screens.

4 sets of lifting screens can independently control height according to scenes, from a low of 2m to a high of 5.5m. When lowered, they form an oppressive and enveloping beam matrix; when raised, they expand spatial openness for Beam Light aerial scanning.

  • Middle Layer (1.5–3.5m): Dominated by Beam Lights and Laser Lights.

Beam Lights perform rhythmic effects such as fast scanning and strobe; Laser Lights “carve” clear geometric patterns and text in the air with high brightness and narrow beam angles.

  • Ground Layer (below 1.5m): Dominated by Bee-Eye Lights and Effect Lights.

They project patterns and color washes to shape visual texture of floors and walls, creating immersive atmosphere.

2. Horizontal Zoning: Matching Functional Area Needs

  • Dance Floor: Full-power output of all four dynamic fixtures. Lifting screens lower to mid-low position; Beam Lights scan intensively; Laser Lights run full-color animation; Bee-Eye Lights add textures; Effect Lights perform high-frequency color changes, forming the visual center.
  • Bar Area: Soft washing from Effect Lights, paired with slow texture projection from Bee-Eye Lights, creating high-end social atmosphere. Lifting screens remain high, providing indirect glow.
  • Booth Area: Low-brightness washing from Effect Lights and local gobo projection from Bee-Eye Lights, ensuring privacy while connecting to the overall atmosphere.

3. Time Segmentation: Pre-Set Multi-Scene Programs

  • Sunset Moment (Lounge Mode): Warm tones (amber, light pink), slow soft patterns from Bee-Eye Lights, lifting screens static at high position, lasers off. Illuminance 80–100lux for relaxed atmosphere.
  • Blue Hour (Transition Mode): Cool tones gradually added; Effect Lights slowly change color; Bee-Eye Lights switch to abstract geometry; Beam Lights scan at low intensity; lasers show static lines; lifting screens move extremely slowly.
  • Midnight Rhapsody (Party Mode): Full-power output. High-speed color changes, intensive strobe and scanning synced to music, laser animation, Bee-Eye prism effects, and fast lifting of screens creating a breathing effect.

Product Application Analysis

The essence of this project lies in the functional positioning and collaboration logic of the five product categories.

FAQs

Q1: What is the core advantage of Lifting Square Beam Screens compared with traditional fixed beam lights?

A: The core advantage is the addition of the fourth dimension — time and movement. Fixed lights can only change direction and color in 2D, while lifting screens add vertical physical motion, creating “breath” and “tension” that pure optical effects cannot match.

Q2: Are there safety risks with laser lights in bars? How to ensure safety?

A: Safety is a top industry standard. We use professional lasers with international safety certifications, including auto-shutoff and fault protection. Lasers are installed to avoid direct eye contact, with angles carefully calculated to stay above audience sightlines or target non-human surfaces. Programmed motion ranges further ensure safety.

Q3: Is daily operation complicated with five fixture categories working together?

A: On the contrary, we provide a highly simplified user interface. All complex programming is pre-done and stored as one-click scenes: Lounge, Party, Birthday Theme, etc. Staff only need to tap a touchscreen or tablet; the system handles full synchronization. Basic adjustments (brightness, speed) are intuitive.

Q4: How does the system adapt to different themed events?

A: The system supports extensive scene expansion. We pre-program theme libraries:

  • EDM Party: high strobe, fast scanning, laser animation
  • Retro Night: warm washes, vintage textures, subtle beams
  • Brand Launch: custom logo projection, brand-matched colors

Scenes can be triggered one-click or auto-synced to music timecode.

Q5: For new bars with limited budgets, is it necessary to buy all five categories?

A: No. This project represents a “full-effect” configuration. For budget-limited clients, we recommend a phased approach:

  1. Phase 1: Beam Lights (energy core) + Effect Lights (ambient base)
  2. Phase 2: Add Bee-Eye Lights for texture
  3. Phase 3: Add Lasers or Lifting Screens for unique identity

The control system is designed with expandable channels and interfaces for seamless future integration.

Conclusion

The Zhangmutou Bar project is a successful practice of light and shadow system integration, verifying the collaborative potential of multi-category professional lighting in commercial spaces. Through the strategic combination and intelligent control of Lifting Square Beam Screens, Laser Lights, Bee-Eye Lights, Effect Lights and Beam Lights, we have achieved a leap from single lighting to multi-dimensional narrative — lighting is no longer a supplement to space, but a core medium that shapes experience, tells stories and drives emotions.

The core insight of this project is that the value of professional lighting design lies not in the quantity of fixtures, but in the deep understanding and creative combination of each product’s characteristics. Lifting screens contribute physical movement; lasers deliver ultimate clarity and penetration; bee-eye lights enrich texture; effect lights embrace atmosphere; beam lights release rhythmic power. Together, they form a complete visual language system.

For the owner, this is not just a purchase of equipment, but an investment in brand visual assets. The system will continuously generate topics, attract customers and increase unit price over long-term operation, with value far exceeding the initial investment. For the industry, this project provides a reusable methodology for bars of similar scale: combining professional tools with clear logic, realizing unlimited creativity through precise control.

Light and shadow never cease; exploration continues. We look forward to working with more partners to write a new chapter in light and shadow narratives for commercial spaces.
